That's how UrbanCat began. From a small obsession, in a small apartment, with a cat who convinced us that he deserved more than a plastic bowl.
Every time you leave home, your cat thinks you're going hunting. We really do. We wander the world looking for fountains they'll want to drink from, for toys to keep them awake, for little rustles that make their pupils dilate.
We test them in a block, on real cats, with people who wake up at 3 am if something makes a noise.
What passes, goes into the collection. What doesn't pass, doesn't exist.
Why do we exist?
Because apartment cats live differently. They don't hunt in the yard, they don't drink from the river, they don't hide in the barn. Their world is a living room, a kitchen, a corner of the sofa. And that world deserves things to match.
Cat products generally look like plastic toys from a flea market. Noisy, ugly, hard to maintain. You hide them behind the door and hope your guests don't see them.
We wanted something different. Products you could leave in the middle of the room. That would work quietly, look good, and withstand real cats, with real claws, in real apartments.
How we choose what reaches you
We don't manufacture. We hunt. We search for products all over the world, order them, open them, put them on the floor in front of a cat, and wait. If the cat comes, it's a start. If the cat stays, it's a product.
We test the noise at 3am, when the house is quiet. We test the durability after two weeks of daily use. We test the cleaning in one minute, with wet hands, without a manual. If it passes all that, we find a place for it in the collection.
If it doesn't pass, it doesn't exist. It doesn't go on sale, it doesn't become a by-product, it never shows up on the site. It disappears. In our world, a mediocre product is worse than none.
Who is UrbanCat for?
For people who care about their home and their cat equally. Who don't want to choose between a beautiful living room and a happy cat. Who understand that a water fountain can also be a design object, if someone has put enough thought into it.
If you have an apartment cat and want to give it the best, you're at home. If you have a dog, there are probably other excellent stores. We do one thing, and we do it well.
What we don't do
We don't make products. We don't have a factory in China, we don't have a prototyping lab, we don't have a product engineer. We have eyes, we have cats, and we have the high standards of a man who refuses to put ugly plastic in his living room.
We don't sell everything we find. The collection is small because it has to be. Each product is there because it has passed a test that most haven't. We prefer a shelf with a few perfect things to a warehouse with a hundred compromises.
We don't give veterinary advice, we don't force subscriptions, we don't send emails every day. We respect cats and the people who own them.
Who we are, technically
UrbanCat is a brand operated by I-Rent Enterprises SRL, a Romanian company. We work from Romania, we sell in Romania, we test in Romania. The products come from all over the world, but the filter they go through is here, in an apartment building, with cats who don't know what a focus group is.
We're a small, fast, obsessive team. We change filters weekly, test noise levels with our ear on the table, and never put a product online without our cat approving it first.
